Hair grows in three stages: the anagen phase, catagen phase and telogen phase. At any given time, about 85% of your hair is in the anagen phase, and 10-15% is in the telogen phase. The anagen phase, called the growth phase, usually lasts between 2 to 6 years and when hair stays in this phase for longer, it grows faster. The catagen phase consists of the hair follicle renewing itself and while the hair still seems to be growing, it's really not. The telogen phase, which lasts between 1-4 months is when new hair develops, pushing out old strands to make room for new ones.
