Henna Heals is a community of Canadian henna artists, started in 2011 by Canadian photographer Frances Darwin, that helps empower those suffering from hair loss by offering a unique service: henna crowns. Initially, the vision was shared by a team of 5 women, however, the number has grown significantly since then. Currently, 150 artists worldwide help those who are suffering from hair loss overcome the painful moment of losing hair due to chemotherapy treatments or diseases such as alopecia by offering intricate henna crowns.
Henna crowns are essentially beautiful, intricate temporary henna tattoos created on the clients' bare heads using a high quality henna paste made from all natural ingredients. The tattoo, which can include feminine motifs, religious symbols or even messages of hope, lasts up to two weeks and has no side effects. For many women, hair is an important part of their identity, so losing it can be a devastatingly painful moment both on a personal and social level. While solutions such as wigs or scarves are meant to help women suffering from hair loss cover up, henna crows can help deliver a positive message and become an interesting statement that has the potential to help women look at the process of hair loss from an inspiring new perspective.
Frances Darwin said that the beautiful henna designs offered by her organization, this form of adornment, can even have a potentially healing impact: “For cancer patients, the henna crowns really are a healing experience. This is all about them reclaiming a part of themselves that would normally be perceived as ill or damaged or not nice to look at and making it more feminine and beautiful,” she stated. Testimonies from patients who had the chance to benefit from this unique form of service fully support the claim.
